One thicker fitted sheet has quietly replaced two layers of bedding in a lot of American bedrooms. Here is what it actually is, and the four questions everyone asks before they try one.
The Ultra-Soft Luxury Fitted Bed Sheet, shown in Beige.
If you have ever stripped a bed and wondered why it takes three separate pieces of fabric to make one place to sleep, you are not alone.
The usual setup is a thin fitted sheet you barely feel, a top sheet that ends up kicked to the bottom of the bed by two in the morning, and a duvet doing all the actual work. Plenty of people have quietly stopped bothering with the middle layer.
What has replaced it is a fitted sheet thick enough to be the comfortable bit. Not a thin cotton layer stretched over the mattress, but a deep plush surface with wide ribbed channels that you lie directly on, with the duvet straight over the top.
There isn't one, and that is the point. This is a fitted sheet. It goes straight onto your mattress, elastic corners pulled down over the sides, and you sleep directly on top of it with your duvet or comforter over you.
It is the same way most of Europe has made a bed for decades. One layer under you, one layer over you, nothing in between to twist around your legs or work its way loose in the night.
The duvet folds back to the plush sheet. Nothing in between.
The difference you notice on the first night is that the surface underneath you is soft rather than functional. A standard fitted sheet is something you put up with. This one is the reason the bed feels good.
It is the most common question, and it is a fair one. The answer is in the ribs.
The surface is not a flat slab of fabric. It is formed into wide rounded channels running the length of the bed, and the gaps between those ribs are open. Air moves through them rather than being trapped against a flat sheet, so it holds warmth without the airless feeling of a heavy blanket underneath you.
Most say it takes the chill off a cold mattress in a way a thin sheet never does, without leaving them throwing the duvet off at 3am. If you run hot, you are also free to drop to a lighter duvet over the top, which is harder to do when the warmth is all coming from above.
The open channels between the ribs are what keep it from feeling airless.
This is where most fitted sheets fail. Mattresses have got deeper, pillow tops and memory foam toppers are normal now, and a lot of sheets are still cut for a mattress from twenty years ago. You end up fighting one corner on while another pings off behind you.
This one is made with deep pockets, so the sides come far enough down to wrap a thick mattress, and far enough to still work with a topper on top of it.
Deep sides, so the corner goes on without a fight.
Elasticated all the way round rather than just at the corners, so it grips underneath the mattress edge and holds. The weight of the fabric helps too. A thin sheet rucks up because there is nothing to it. This has enough substance to stay where you put it, which means you are not remaking the bed every few days because a corner let go.

- Rucks and wrinkles by morning
- Needs a top sheet to feel finished
- Cold to get into in winter
- Deep plush surface you actually feel
- Deep pockets that fit toppers and thick mattresses
- Elasticated all round and heavy enough to stay flat

Of course. Most people stop, but nothing about it prevents you putting a top sheet over it as normal.
Machine washable. Wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry to keep the pile soft.
